Title
Argentine Emigration: Mobility Trajectories in the Pre- and Post-Pandemic Period (2016-2026)
Abstract
Migration from Argentina to Spain has occurred at various points in history: the brain drain of the 1960s, the exile of the 1970s, the hyperinflation of the late 1980s and the ‘corralito’ crisis of the 2000s. Currently, a new phase is underway, beginning around 2016 with the change in Argentina’s government and economic conditions (the end of the Kirchner administrations), which was subsequently heavily impacted by the restrictions imposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the data underpinning this research on the new migration flow from Argentina to Spain indicates that, since 2016, the number of Argentines residing in Spain has increased steadily before rising sharply in 2023. The aim of this research is to examine this new emigration flow, which exhibits unique characteristics given the current restrictions on global mobility. To this end, we propose a methodological strategy based on a mixed-methods design (qualitative and quantitative) that aims to: a) characterize this new flow of emigrants in terms of sociodemographic variables, and b) reconstruct migration trajectories and labour-market integration strategies in Spain. This research aims to deepen our understanding of Argentine emigration—a structurally driven trickle of migrants that, although not large-scale, is persistent and represents part of the social reproduction strategies (Bourdieu, 2011) of broad segments of society.
