Title

Technological Choices in the Northern and Central-Western Regions of the Central Sierras (Córdoba) during the Late Period (ca. 1500–450 BP)

Abstract

The aim of this project is to advance research that will contribute to a better understanding of the contexts, practices, and social meanings during the Late Period (ca. 1500–450 BP). To this end, from a comparative perspective, we will examine the Northern and Central-Western regions of the Central Sierras, focusing on the characterization of the technological choices of the materials identified in the archaeological record, namely rock art, ceramics, and lithics. Building on this approach, we will examine two aspects of the artifacts. First, their morpho-technological dimensions, based on direct and indirect evidence; and second, their microscopic characterization, through further physicochemical studies of pigment mixtures used in rock art and petrographic studies of lithic tools and ceramic assemblages. These two lines of research will allow us to identify indicators of continuity and change in technological decisions and investigate the circulation of knowledge and shared idiosyncrasies as a means of reinforcing senses of belonging.
