Title
Convergences and Divergences: Newtonian Dynamics and the Reconfiguration of German Metaphysics in the 18th Century
Abstract
The aim of this project is to examine in depth the complex process of assimilation and multifaceted impact of Newtonianism on 18th-century German philosophy. Building on the premise of the previous FORMAR project, titled “Reception and Impact of Newtonianism in 18th-Century German Philosophy”, which focused on the critique of the academic metaphysics of Leibniz and Wolff and the role of Kant, the present study will expand the analysis to include other key figures and specific controversies, exploring how Newtonian physics not only challenged but also reconfigured the metaphysical foundations of the era. Special attention will be given to the development of concepts such as “force”, “space”, “time”, and “matter”, as well as to the disciplinary and institutional interactions that characterized this transitional period.
