Title
Conceptualizations of the Records Continuum Model from the Perspective of Integrated Archival Science: Theoretical Articulations and Experiences in Latin American Contexts
Abstract
The Records Continuum Model (RCM) is one of the most influential and debated approaches in contemporary archival science, particularly in the context of digitization and the management of electronic records. Introduced by Frank Upward in the 1990s, it draws on the philosophical notion of the space-time continuum: everything that surrounds us has been and continues to be part of a complex and expanding environment. This reality prompts archival science to address one of the major challenges of the post-custodial patrimonialist paradigm: the instantaneous creation of archives that can be communicated across vast spaces and over long periods of time, with digital environments mediating access to them. Despite its growing presence in specialized literature and its potential to rethink the organisation of records in digital environments, we consider that understanding and practical application of this model in the Latin American context remain limited. Through this project, we seek to examine the RCM from a situated perspective, to promote a critical appropriation of its foundations grounded in local archival realities. We propose a qualitative, exploratory, and reflexive methodological approach that articulates two levels of analysis: on the one hand, the theoretical level, through the study and reinterpretation of the model’s central concepts; on the other, the empirical level, through the analysis of representative cases of public and private archives that will make it possible to identify points of convergence, tensions, and challenges in articulating the model with existing archival practices. For the theoretical analysis, we will undertake a critical and comparative reading of selected literature, together with the development of conceptual matrices that will make it possible to reconstruct the model’s key notions and their internal relationships. At the empirical level, five archives belonging to public and private institutions with a social function will be selected, seeking diversity in terms of jurisdictional level, organisational structure, and degree of adoption of digital technologies. For each case, we plan to conduct institutional document analysis, interviews, and field observation; undertake a survey of practices relating to the organisation of and access to records; and develop comparative data sheets that will allow us to identify tensions, points of articulation, and elements of theoretical reinterpretation of the model.
