Title

Teacher Training in Córdoba's History: Ideas, Institutions, Practices (19th & 20th Centuries)

Abstract

The project attempts to delve deeper into the team's previous lines of investigation, focusing on the relationship between education, schooling, politics and culture in the province of Córdoba. Understanding the historical setting of teacher training in Córdoba during the 19th and 20th centuries is the leading objective, to be achieved by the analysis of the interplay among pedagogical ideas, institutionalization, educational policies and teaching practices, linking the local to regional, national and international contexts. Specific objectives include exploring teacher training institutions, their curricula and pedagogical knowledge; analyzing the influence of pedagogical approaches, such as normalism, positivism, the New Education movement, university reformism and antipositivism, along with teacher training intellectual networks; and examining the connection between teacher training and the evolution of the modern school system in Córdoba. The diversification of teacher training across various educational levels and methods (primary, secondary, university and physical education teaching) will be explored and the pedagogical practices of both certified and non-certified teachers will be pieced together. Both analyses will consider state regulations, pedagogical discourses and situated experiences, bearing in mind gender perspective. The method entails a multidisciplinary approach, combining theoretical and methodological frameworks to analyze the relationship between official regulations and discourses and everyday pedagogical practices. A wide range of documentary sources will be utilized, including curricula, syllabi, administrative files, school photographs, legislation, decrees, minute books and monitoring reports. The spatial scope centers on the province of Córdoba, while still acknowledging national and international connections, and the timeframe covers the 19th and 20th centuries, which allows for an analysis from the origins of the modern school system and early teacher training initiatives to the reshaping and hierarchization of tertiary-level teacher training by the end of the 20th century.
