Derechos y política a nivel subnacional (travesti/trans)
PICIFFyH

Title
Meanings of Democracy and Processes of Democratization in Argentina During the 20th Century
Abstract
The proposed work plan is framed within the notions of democracy and democratization processes in Argentina during the 20th century. Regarding the strictly political meanings of democracy, the project aims to examine the temporal layers embedded within the concept of democracy, its shifts in meaning, its uses, and what these transformations reveal about society, the hegemonic groups that legitimize them, and the underlying ideological and social disputes. Democratization refers to the quality of democracy beyond the political regime and the electoral sphere. It encompasses "both the extension of rights to those who were deprived of them, the inclusion of individuals or actors who remained excluded from participation, as well as the dissemination of democratic principles to spheres not previously governed by such criteria" (Iazetta, 2013, p. 147). Ultimately, the project addresses two dimensions of the democratic: the first, situated on an eminently political level and materialized across three research lines, concerns the diverse conceptualizations that democracy took on during the first half of the 20th century. The second, carried out by the five remaining individual research lines, operates on the plane of practices and addresses democratization processes and experiences, not only regarding the political system, but also at the social, cultural, and economic levels, aiming to build a more inclusive society with broader rights and spheres of participation for all. The period under analysis, spanning the 20th century, ranges from the early discussions to expand citizen participation in a broad sense; through what can clearly be termed "mass politics" and Peronism; the political significance of its proscription and the cycle of working-class and popular mobilization and political-ideological radicalization from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, along with its brutal repression by civil and military governments; to the late century, marked by the crisis of representation among traditional actors such as political parties and trade unions, and the gradual emergence of new actors and demands.
