Un museo en una casa

PICIFFyH

Title

A Museum in a House

Abstract

This project aims to construct a biography of the building that currently houses part of the Museum of Anthropologies. The building was a family residence from the turn of the twentieth century until the 1970s, when it was acquired by the National University of Córdoba to accommodate various university offices and, eventually, the museum. The house, which is located on a street and within a neighbourhood that played a significant role in the city’s process of urbanisation and modernisation between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, represents an important site in urban history. It constitutes a point of intersection between different spheres: the history of Nueva Córdoba, a neighbourhood of Córdoba (Argentina), and Yrigoyen Avenue (formerly Argentina Avenue), and the histories of the families who owned and inhabited the house, whose surnames attest to the family connections among different generations of Córdoba’s elite. To understand the meanings attached to this building and the institution it houses, it is necessary to avoid considering it at a single point in its existence and instead consider its entire trajectory. It is through this winding and complex trajectory, and through its interaction with multiple social actors, that histories and meanings have accumulated to shape the museum as it exists today.
