Title

The Anthropocene in the Andean-Patagonian Arid Zones, Problems of Archeological Research and Methodological Aspects

Abstract

The study of the Anthropocene involves research into the diversity of archaeological and paleoenvironmental signals and records capable of providing local and regional scale information on the dynamics through which changes of varying magnitude occurred as a consequence of niche construction by our species. A fundamental task for the study of the Anthropocene is the survey of these records, which account for the processes involved at different time scales. Likewise, and in parallel, it is necessary to address the methodological problems involved and to calibrate the analytical tools to be used. In this project, we address the study of records from the arid zones of the Neotropical biogeographic region, which, with varying resolutions and conditions of preservation, make it possible to assess the different signals of human interactions with other species and environments over time in this part of the continent. To this end, two types of objectives are proposed: methodological objectives, aimed at understanding the properties of the archaeological record, and substantive objectives, aimed at accounting for the variability in the conditions of ecological insertion of human populations under different environmental conditions. The development of the proposed objectives will, in the long term, allow us to deepen our knowledge of the human populations that inhabited the region in the past, as well as of the Quaternary faunal and plant communities, contributing to the study of the processes that characterize the Anthropocene in South America and, on a global scale, especially those that can only be understood over the long term.
