Title

Construction of Scientific Models: Methodological, Epistemological and Historical Aspects

Abstract

Contemporary scientific activity has been substantially transformed by the extended use of models, computational simulations, and, more recently, machine learning and artificial intelligence. These changes in scientific practices have undoubtedly transformed the way in which scientific knowledge is generated and evaluated. In this project, we will analyze these scientific practices, paying particular attention to how reliability is generated through their construction and use, and to how they are articulated within theoretical, experimental, and technological contexts. In particular, the project seeks to: 1. Propose approaches to the question of the relationship between models and target systems that place emphasis on the contexts in which models are created or produced, especially those that are technologically highly sophisticated. 2. Explore the limits and tensions surrounding approaches to representation and idealization in terms of similarity, both ontologically and logico-mathematically, in order to suggest alternatives regarding substitutive capacity. 3. Propose an approach to the question of the epistemic credentials of the results of experiments and simulations articulated by scientific models, taking into account their process of construction and their lineage within the epistemic communities that develop and employ them. 4. Analyze philosophical perspectives on the skills involved in expertise as a tool for elucidating the role of experts in scientific communities, paying particular attention to the place of tacit knowledge within them. 5. Analyze, using tools from the philosophical field, the development of practices and emerging technologies over recent decades in the area of disease treatment and diagnosis. 6. Explore the origin of the artifactual-mechanical attitude toward models in relation to the links between general conceptions of nature in modernity, methodological approaches, and mechanical representations of different domains of phenomena.
