Title
Formation of Canons and Cultural Areas in Contemporary Argentine Literature: Otherness/Identities, Aesthetics, Affects and Ecocriticism as Critical Series.
Abstract
This project addresses key issues in the Argentine literary system (SLA), including the tensions between center and periphery in the dynamics of canon formation and the interaction between literary and discursive canons and margins. It also examines the formation of cultural regions as a constitutive part of the SLA, in opposition to a centralist perspective. Canon and cultural regions constitute two spatial and temporal axes through which the SLA can be analyzed both synchronically and diachronically. As an innovative contribution, the project also incorporates the analysis of critical theories currently under debate, including the affect theory (in its intersections with the theory of emotions, as well as in relation to psychoanalysis and literary theory, particularly Rancière’s regimes of visibility and the distribution of the sensible), along with ecocriticism. These approaches enable a connection to the issue of otherness/identity, as they emerge from the postcolonial crisis and involve a reformulation of the values associated with modern anthropocentrism. Hypothesis: the structural changes in the SLA since the 1940s are linked to constructions of otherness and their impact on the reconfiguration of sociopolitical, ethnic, gender and psychological identities. Within the SLA, these changes are evident in the interrelations among social voices and in continuities/discontinuities between traditions and innovations that have transformed how the literary space is valued. Through the otherness/identity dialectic, contemporary critical theories such as the affective turn and ecocriticism can be reconsidered since both challenge the notion of the logocentric subject. Diachronic and synchronic issues concerning the re-presentation of cultural identities and otherness, together with the representation of affects and the environment, may have brought about variations in the canon/margins dialectic understood as a shifting correlate of literary space. This would allow us to reexamine the diverse construction of multiple canons and margins in tension by institutions of literary criticism, as well as how these relationships and interactions may have been connected to the development of those re-presentations of cultural otherness and identities. Lines of work: the proposed theoretical framework will be analyzed collectively based on selected bibliography, while these multifaceted issues will be addressed individually within each specific project.
