Title

Aesthetic Questions: Contemporary Art, Thought, and Writing

Abstract

The contemporary can be read against its own self-awareness, perhaps as that which refuses to represent the actual, and, to a certain extent, the concepts of art and literature, originating in a technically primitive modernity, already point to such inactuality in their very concepts. If literature remains connected to the realm of art, since it is based on a use of language that is not merely transitive or communicative, that is, on a suspension of its practical sphere, it can therefore be included in the same inquiry into the conditions of its possibility. It is not only a matter of knowing whether there is a realm in which certain writings present themselves as detached from a representation of ends, but above all of asking about the place of artistic and literary practices in the contemporary era, which could also be defined as that moment in which art is delineated around its own negation and its end as affirmative content. If we turn to Hegel, aesthetics itself takes the place of a definition of art, and every judgment must negate itself so that any artistic practice may remain possible, except that this negation, in turn, takes the form of a new judgment. In Adorno’s terms, “Art, for its part, seeks refuge in its own negation, hoping to survive through its death.” The problem to be addressed in this set of objects is that of the shifts within the very questions that constitute them. If the members of this corpus are still defined as literature and art, such definitions intersect with their contemporary character. Our research seeks to deepen, extend, and explore the theoretical reflections, grounded in philosophical aesthetics, that have emerged from the final decades of the twentieth century to the present, with a view to delineating their critical scope and reflective potential in order to account for contemporary art and literature. It will also seek to analyse literary texts and works from the so-called visual arts that may not only exemplify aesthetic concepts but, above all, problematise those conceptual foundations. The project will therefore unfold across three areas: the study of critical and aesthetic reflections on contemporary literature and art; the analysis of literary works and works of art in local and global contexts; and the survey of artistic discourses that constitute narratives proper to aesthetic practices.
