Title
Changes and Permanence of Intellectual and Iconographic Traditions in Antiquity: Dialogues with the Modern World.
Abstract
The project "Changes and Permanence of Intellectual and Iconographic Traditions in Antiquity. Dialogues with the Modern World" is proposed as a continuation of investigations carried out from 2014 to 2022 by the Science and Technology Office (SECyT) projects. Furthermore, this project has been formulated to study the creation, modification, and persistence of iconographic and textual traditions originated in the ancient world, as well as their incidence in later contexts. To this end, paradigmatic texts and archaeological sources will be analyzed, promoting both the interdisciplinary dialogue within social and human sciences and the dialogue between antiquity and the modern world. The selected corpus allows for an investigation of the complex articulations between past and present in texts and images that incorporate "historical" information, myths, legends, and rituals as loans, allusion, and rewriting. This refers to the arbitrary expropriations of fragments of the past, memory, and tradition in order to shape memories, and socio-cultural identities, or to defy the existing ones. These dynamics entail the creation of eclectic tapestries, in which past reminiscences interact with present images, and in the process, a subtle recreation and reconstruction of the old and the modern emerge.
