Title
Intentional Minds: Varieties of Content, Expression, and Attribution
Abstract
Our project aims to examine and evaluate various philosophical and empirical contributions to develop a philosophical account of intentionality conceived as a heterogeneous phenomenon, that is, one that can be found in different types of mental states and can exhibit differences in degree and kind, such that it is suitable for understanding the mental life and behaviours of human and non-human creatures. This phenomenon admits multiple modes of expression, through gestures, behaviours, and linguistic expressions, whether verbal or written, which may also vary in complexity and can be read, detected, or attributed in multiple ways and through different mechanisms of greater or lesser cognitive complexity. Characterised in this way, the phenomenon of intentionality is attributable in very different ways to different behaviours, including the communicative behaviours of animals and humans and, by extension, to artifacts and designed products. However, it has an evolutionary history whose origins make it possible to trace and identify phylogenetically primitive precursors and variants of intentional states, which may help us understand the types of mental life currently found in different species. The need to explain a wide variety of empirical evidence supporting the proposed approach encourages us to seek the best way to satisfy two seemingly conflicting objectives. The first is oriented toward the search for a common “explanandum” and a general approach to addressing it: identifying the features shared by the abilities and behaviours of minds and intentional creatures of different kinds, and accounting for their foundations and common general features. The second objective will be to identify the differential and even distinctive features of certain forms of intentionality and to draw the relevant theoretical distinctions that will enable us to capture and account for those aspects in which these phenomena differ from one another.
