Title
Prometheus and the Algorithm: Artificial Intelligence Seen in Light of the Thoughts on Technique in the 20th and 21st Centuries
Abstract
Although concern about the effects to which human techniques give rise can be traced back to Antiquity, it was only in the twentieth century that it became a central concern in philosophical, sociological, and anthropological thought, as well as in artistic works. Technique was identified as a central actor in this process, from the advent of aerial bombardment and poison gas in the First World War, through the technical rationalization of concentration camps and the unprecedented destructive power of atomic bombs in the Second World War, to, finally, the devastating yet gradual effects of the technical-productive model on ecosystem sustainability. In short, it was the application of devices arising from human technical creativity that came to be identified as jointly responsible for the closure of the horizon of early-modern optimism and the opening of our late-modern “No Future.” At the same time, also in the second half of the twentieth century, cybernetics emerged in a postwar context as a transdisciplinary field that, among other objectives, sought to develop a general theory of the behavior of organisms and machines. “Artificial general intelligence” does not yet exist, and apparently no one knows exactly how to achieve it (Larson, 2022). What does exist is “narrow AI” (or weak AI), that is, AI applied to specific tasks, such as facial recognition, Internet searches, or driving a car. Some ethical-political approaches focus on this current, concrete technology, namely, narrow AI, highlighting the network of political and ideological actors underlying its operation (Crawford), as well as the extractivism of human knowledge that makes its functioning possible and the machinic biases through which social inequalities are reproduced (Pasquinelli, 2021). Within this framework, approaches range from proposing and demanding regulations, laws, and codes of conduct to attempts to incorporate ethical constraints into the design process, with the aim of understanding and mitigating biases and negative social consequences. Other lines of thought argue that the greatest concerns revolve around the development of “artificial general intelligence,” a term referring to AI systems endowed with a form of superhuman intelligence. It is in this type of speculation that scientific knowledge and technological projections become hybridized with ancient myths in an interwoven framework that we propose to examine in the present project.
