Title
Anthropology of Festivity and Play: Forms of Sociability, Performances, and Contemporary Subjectivities
Abstract
This project builds on and expands hypotheses and findings from research carried out by the team about the performative dimension of practices, discourses, and territories associated with pleasures, leisure, play, festive cultural consumption, and celebrations. These ethnographic inquiries regarding nightlife led us to study the way in which the festive, as a socio- and psychogenetic transformation mechanism (Elías, 1998), operates as cultural performances that “(im)possibilize our attachment, with pleasure and frenzy, to an order that makes us subjects” (Blázquez, 2020: 9). Celebrations, in turn, relate closely to play and the liminal experience of flow that performance enables. Festivity and play share this common condition of constituting spaces/times and relational webs in which everyday forms of subjection and subjectivation weaken and other forms of experience become possible (Turner & Bruner, 1986). With the aim of addressing this performative dimension and describing the webs of meaning that enable the particular social experience of festivity and play, various fieldwork projects will be conducted across highly diverse empirical objects, all related to the mass and popular culture of the city of Córdoba. Although each object will be studied in its specificity, the project is grounded in the construction of a common methodology and set of theoretical concerns in order to formulate comparative conclusions. Through the comparative analysis of performances, transformances and playformances under study, we will test the hypothesis according to which, through these performances, subjects construct images of themselves, others, and the world, the experimentation of which would allow for the assembly of specific subjectivities. The ludic-constructive character of liminoid performances (Turner, 1986), associated with festive and play events, would allow for experiencing other combinations of the senses sedimented in bodies and would enable the construction of new, technologically mediated subjectivities.
