Title
Commoning: Spatial Contradictions and Emergences from the Practiced and the Planned in Córdoba and the RMC (2026-2027)
Abstract
This research draws upon the work carried out as a team in previous projects, approved and funded by the Office of Research, Science, and Technology (SeICyT) from 2010 to 2025. In this research, we will delve deeper into this work, adopting a perspective that understands space as an active and performative dimension of social processes. In the face of the advance of capitalism and the weakening of the State, commoning arises as a shared strategy and a meeting point for some collectives, communities, roundtables, and assemblies. The main objective of the project is to collaboratively build knowledge on re-existence practices that emerge in processes of appropriation, ways of inhabiting, commoning, and territorial defense by individual and collective actors in the city of Córdoba and across the Córdoba Metropolitan Region (RMC), focusing on the geographical imaginations and spatial contradictions emerging from macro and micropolitics, as well as the tensions between the planned and the practiced. We focus on two interconnected, cross-cutting axes: (1) the co-construction of knowledge and spatialities built through commoning, and (2) territorial conflicts and tensions between the practiced and the planned. The spatial and temporal scope encompasses the city of Córdoba and the RMC, involving fieldwork in the city’s neighborhoods as well as in various towns and communes of the surrounding region. The questions that guide our research are: What are the re-existence practices that emerge in the appropriation, ways of inhabiting, and territorial defense by individual and collective actors in the city of Córdoba and across the RMC? What forms of knowledge construction emerge from commoning in its vital forces and gestures that shape the collective/communal? What spatial conflicts and contradictions emerge from macro and micropolitics? How do the tensions between the planned and the practiced spatialize? Framed within qualitative methodologies and an ethnographic approach, this research adopts a flexible, interpretive, reflective, and engaged design and logic. We will carry out participant and non-participant observation, in-depth interviews, collective mappings, participatory workshops, and other joint activities aligned with the proposed objectives.
